Early Airplanes (1 of 9)

Roger Hamilton of Shreve, Ohio, writes: "My grandfather, Edward Hamilton, served in the Army Signal Corps from December 26, 1916 until June 4, 1920. It wasn't until after my grandmother's death in 1990 that we discovered some record of his military service amongst her papers. We know he was involved with observation balloons during WWI. Unfortunately, we know little else. He spent most of his time with the 19th Balloon Company, moving up in rank until achieving the rank of Master Signal Electrician on May 12, 1918. This is the last we know until he was discharged from the 32nd Balloon Company at Langley Field, Virginia, on June 4, 1920. These photos belonged to my grandfather, but I have no history as to whether he personally took them during his service, or acquired them during that time."
