next Reader and veteran John Colton writes, "...a photo of [the] 137 squadron, Royal Air Force, taken in Aug 1944 in Normandie, France subsequent to the invasion. The aircraft shown is the Hawker Typhoon which was used as a ground troops support attacking enemy gun positions, tanks, trains, enemy motorized transport,enemy troops...It was also used to attack shipping, shooting down V-I's (buzz-bombs), bomber escort of short range and a times air combat with enemy fighters, Me 109's, FW 190's...Prior to the invasion, and operating out England, operations were flown attacking channel shipping, attacks on German radar sites and air defense of Great Britain. Typhoon armament-rockets, bombs and 20 mm cannon...I flew with this unit from May 1944 till Mar. 1945 completing 104 missions." |
