September 15, 1858: Post Haste
Scheduled overland mail service travels by stage from Tipton, Missouri, to San Francisco. The semiweekly service is supposed to deliver the mail in 24 days but frequently takes much longer. Before this service, mail sent from New York to California went by ship to Panama, where it was transported across the Panama isthmus, and then traveled by ship to California.
