July 31, 1790: First U.S. Patent
George Washington approves the first U.S. patent for Samuel Hopkins' improvement in making Pot ash and Pearl ash—two essential chemicals for producing flint glass, soft soap and various drugs. Obtained from wood ashes, potash is also a valuable source for bleaching linen and scouring wool in the textile industry.
